Reality Shifting: Awakening in the World You Choose
When the lines between dreaming, imagining, and awakening start to blur
What if spiritual awakening isn’t just about seeing the truth… but about choosing which truth you wake up in?
That’s the question bubbling up in one of the stranger corners of TikTok and Reddit lately—something called reality shifting. At first glance, it sounds like a made-up trend for bored night owls. But if you dig deeper, you’ll find it brushes against some of the oldest spiritual questions humanity’s ever asked.
Reality shifting is the idea that you can mentally (and maybe even spiritually) move your consciousness into another world—whether that’s a fictional universe, a parallel timeline, or a different version of your own life. Some people see it as a form of lucid dreaming. Others? They swear they’re actually there. Hogwarts. Ancient Rome. A life where they made the choices they didn’t make here.
Two of the most popular techniques are:
The Alice in Wonderland Method – Picture yourself running, falling down a rabbit hole, and landing exactly where you want to be.
The Starfish Method – Lie still with your arms and legs spread, count slowly, and drift until you feel yourself shift.
Whether these are gateways to real, tangible worlds or simply elaborate theater of the mind, they raise a more interesting question: How much of the world you live in right now is the one you chose… and how much was chosen for you?
Spiritual awakening, at its heart, is a process of dismantling the limits we’ve been handed. Society, religion, family, culture—all of it builds a set of walls around your mind. You’re told what’s real, what’s possible, what’s “normal.” And most people never push past those walls.
Reality shifting, whether literal or symbolic, invites you to try. Even if you never step into another universe, you may find yourself stepping into a truer version of your own life.
Because in the end, awakening is not just about waking up.
It’s about deciding where you want to open your eyes.
