The Long Way Home
Finding Yourself in the Story of the Pistis Sophia
Ever felt like you’re holding a spark of something magnificent inside you, but the world keeps trying to blow it out?
That’s the story of the Pistis Sophia. In the Gnostic tradition, Sophia is Wisdom herself, but she’s also the part of us that wandered away from the Source. She looked down into the lower realms, saw a glimmer of light, and thought it was the real thing. She reached for it, fell, and found herself trapped in the shadows of matter.
Think of it like this: Imagine a bird that sees the reflection of the sun in a muddy pond. It dives down, thinking it’s heading for the sky, but ends up tangled in the reeds, its wings heavy and wet. That’s Sophia. And honestly? That’s most of us, chasing things we think will fulfill us, only to realize we’ve lost sight of the open sky.
The Pistis Sophia tells us that even in the deepest dark, she never stopped calling out. She sang thirteen “repentances”—these beautiful, raw prayers—until the Light heard her and started the long process of bringing her home.
The Nag Hammadi texts, like the Gospel of Truth, say that “ignorance is a nightmare,” but waking up is the dawn. Sophia is the one who wakes up first.
So, let me ask you: Where in your life are you still reaching for a reflection instead of the sun?
