I been watching people talk about awakening like it is a diploma.
They got a word for it. Gnosis. They wear it. They tell you they have it, the way a man might tell you he has been to Nashville. Like the trip is over. Like the rest of us are still sitting in the parking lot.
That is the feed.
The old book does not talk like that.
Gospel of Thomas, saying 3. Coptic, Nag Hammadi Codex II. Lambdin’s English:
“When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty.”
That is the manuscript, in Lambdin’s wording. It does not define the modern word “gnosis.” It does not split the room into the awakened and the asleep. It does not hand anybody a rank.
What it says is harder than a rank.
If you come to know yourselves, you become known. You realize you are sons of the living father. If you will not, you dwell in poverty, and you are that poverty.
I am not going to pretend I know every Coptic shade in that line. I don’t. Other readers argue about how much “know” means experience, and how much it means recognition. That argument belongs on the table. It does not belong as a sermon.
Here is what I think it means, and I will label it as thinking, not as what the ink promised.
Knowing yourself, in this saying, ain’t a finish line. It is a light coming on in the house you already live in. You find out whose child you are. You find out the poverty was not a neighborhood. It was a refusal to look.
The feed reverses it. The feed wants a badge. I woke up. I got it. You didn’t. If you have to keep announcing it, I am not sure you found the father. I think you found a new name for the same old hunger.
Yeshua, at least in this saying, is not recruiting a special class. He is pointing at the light already in a person. The living father. Inside. If you will not know yourselves, you don’t just miss a prize. You live as the lack.
That is a hard word. I will not soften it into a guarantee. I will not tell you that reading this will heal your body or save your soul or lock in some awakening. I don’t do that. I am pointing. You walk.
This saying, if I am honest, will not let you build a clubhouse called Awakened. Sons of the living father is family language. Poverty is family language too. Both of them are about you, not about the folks you look down on.
If the manuscript is right, the work is to know yourself. Not to advertise that you already did.
If I am wrong about what it means, the words are still there. Lambdin. Saying 3. You can read them without me.
