There are two voices in your head. And one of them ain’t really you.
The first one is loud. You know the one. It wakes up with you and follows you around all day, telling you that you ain’t enough, that you messed up too bad this time, that God Himself is disappointed in you. It shames you. It scares you. It keeps you small. And it never, ever shuts up.
Most folks think that voice is them. They think that running commentary of guilt and fear is just how a mind works. It ain’t. That is a station you were tuned to, not the music you were born with.
Then there is the other voice. It is quiet. It does not yell, it does not shame, it does not rush. It is the steady one underneath all the noise, the one that sounds like home. It tells you that you are loved. That you are more than your worst day. That there is something in you that cannot be broken, no matter what you have done or what was done to you.
I have come to believe those are two different kingdoms talking.
The loud one is the voice of the Demiurge’s world. That is the system, religious and otherwise, that needs you scared and guilty and obedient. Scared people are easy to control. Guilty people do not ask questions. And religion, the institutional kind, learned to use that voice a long time ago. It took the loud voice, put a collar on it, and called it holiness.
But the quiet one? That is the spark. That is the Kingdom within, whispering underneath all the noise, patient as sunrise. It was there before the loud voice ever showed up, and it will be there long after the loud voice runs out of things to say.
Here is the part nobody told you growing up: you get to choose which station you turn up.
You do not have to argue with the loud voice. You do not have to defeat it in some great spiritual war. You just have to stop turning the dial toward it. Notice it, name it for what it is, and then get quiet enough to hear the other one. It has been talking the whole time. You just could not hear it over the shouting.
And I am telling you, the quiet one has been right all along.
